Charice photos & videos: X Factor Philippines - Davao Auditions

Updated (27 May 2012) - Below is a playlist of videos uploaded on YouTube:

Many thanks to this series of Charice tweets and photos from Ms Angeli Pangilinan Valenciano (@AngeliPV):

Why was Charice crying?

I feel for Charice. It's bad enough to have a parent die, worse when you've been missing him for so long and then suddenly he's gone in a violent way. I'm just glad the memory of it was brought on by something good and happy, and that the X Factor Philippines judges are becoming like family for her.

Charice (Tsares) videos: X Factor Philippines auditions (Cebu)

I just really enjoyed watching these videos. Charice is naturally funny and she makes people happy with her amazing voice, even when done out of fun, and by just being herself.

According to a tweet by @jamie34peters:
(Charice pretending to be a contestant) Charice began singing "Kailangan Kita"...

Dreamgirls Composer: Charice's version of "Listen" is better than the original

Many, including myself at times, would say of certain things that, generally, the original's the best. But Charice is obviously far from being part of what's general or usual out there.

And so while there are people who get peeved when her fans say that she's better than the original when she sings covers, a significant composer like Henry Krieger does not hesitate at all to say that yes, Charice did better than the original.

From broadwayworld.com:
InDepth InterView: Henry Krieger Talks LUCKY DUCK, DREAMGIRLS, SIDE SHOW...

Recently, noted composer Henry Krieger was generous enough to take a comprehensive look back at his many accomplishments onstage and onscreen, turning back the pages of time and sharing memories of DREAMGIRLS...

PC: Charice did “Listen” from the DREAMGIRLS film on GLEE to much acclaim last year - she has done this column, as well, actually.

HK: Oh, yeah - I love her! Her version is better than the original.
That's a wonderful compliment from a great composer to a great singer.

To it I'll just add that it's not only that Charice sings it better. Even more than this, she has a very, very beautiful voice that sounds rich & deep in whatever song genre. And her performances are always passionate. I think this is a rare combination in singers, especially these days.

So Real: Charice, Cover Girl of Preview Magazine's Jan-Feb 2012 Issue

Many people must be so jaded not just with life, but with themselves, that every time something so real comes along, they can't quite believe it. They're the type who, when they see a luxurious arrangement of perfectly long-stemmed, blood-red roses,  just pass by it thinking, it looks so real it must be fake.

From stylebible.ph

That's how this kind of people react to Charice - to her talent, her story, her achievements, her values, her personality. And recently, her being a fashion magazine's cover girl.

Preview Magazine, the Philippine's fashion authority, opened the year 2012 with a bang -  Charice on their magazine cover!  She looks so gorgeously sophisticated that many of those who were quickest to react when the magazine came out were those who said, "Over photoshopped!"

Right, they take one quick look and then make an even quicker judgement. These people wouldn't know anything authentic even if it were to come under their nose.

Sure, in Preview Magazine's cover Charice didn't look her usual self mainly because this superstar of a girl is so natural and so totally comfortable with herself that many times she doesn't mind going out in public or even coming out on TV and photos with just the lightest make-up, and at times, no make up at all. (Yet you see she's naturally beautiful even with light make-up.)

So now that she's delightfully Preview Magazine's first cover girl for 2012, not only do these people think Charice's photo has been digitally altered, but they've also been criticizing her and the magazine for it. Oh well, as Jessica Zafra said, "the talentless are always resentful" - unfortunately, even of what's authentic and true.

Viewing the behind-the-scenes video below belies any "over photoshopped" claim:

And here's a favorite retweet about it by the cover shot's make-up artist:
@annecurtissmith “@lizzzuy: RT @juansarte: Charice for Preview Behind the Scenes video. Eto ang pruweba. Hindi po yun Photoshop. youtube.com/watch?v=RoUmLM…”
To Charice, don't mind the crabs who want to pull you down with them. Just keep on setting trends, creating waves, breaking barriers, expanding and perfecting your talents, and strengthening your character. With your big, big heart you'll go very, very far!

Two Mags Open the Year 2012 with Charice

Charice on the cover of Preview Magazine January-February 2012 issue. Photos on right are unedited raw shots:

Charice featured in Isola Magazine January-February 2012 issue:

Charice is beautiful inside and out and that's why she shines in every way.

A New Year's message to Charice and all Chasters all over the world:
Problems and pain have entered our lives this year, but if we take a closer look and count, we'll be amazed to see that the blessings have been so much more!

Here's to ending 2011 and starting 2012 with a heart bursting with thanksgiving!

A Blessed Christmas to Charice and Chasters

Photo from Viken Seropian Photography's post in Facebook
Christmas eve.

In the morning I texted the one Chaster whose mobile number I have to already greet her before the networks start getting busy. I was surprised to find out that she was preparing for a Chaster activity later in the day. You see, I did some days of pre-Christmas reflection and so not only had I not been online for more than a week but I had also been out of touch with news in general.

So reading her text, I thought, wow, Chasters are a real community, celebrating Christmas eve together, just like a family! I told her to enjoy, thinking it was going to be a fun get-together. Well, I got even more surprised - and edified and proud - when she clarified that they were actually going to meet to repack some goods for the victims of the typhoon Sendong (international name, "Washi") that hit the Philippines last week. Chasters meeting on Christmas eve to reach out to those in need - it is definitely not the first time that Chasters are doing this. There are more than enough stories in Charicemania.com for instance of "Chaster Clauses", that is, Chasters who help out other Chasters; there was also a reach out to the elderly in the Golden Acres Home by Philippine Chasters this year.

So why are Chasters as Chasters always thinking of extending that helping hand to another? I'd say that Charice simply inspires the best in people. This simple girl who gave all she could to help her family while growing up, and who is now sharing her music and her life story with the world. Grounded in faith, she constantly inspires hope and spreads love. People who admire and look up to Charice seem to naturally end up passing on the same spirit of joyfully sharing and giving what they have - it's the spirit of Christmas, lived throughout the year and especially so this season.

Charice said it so well in the last song of her Christmas concert in the Philippines:
This season may we never forget the love we have for Jesus
Let him be the one to guide us as another new year starts
And may the spirit of Christmas be always in our hearts.
Charice and Chasters, may you and your families all have a Blessed Christmas!

Charice Rising To The Top With Her Own Unique Identity

Similar to other posts I had written, this started as a comment on another page, Charice on CNN, Her Best Interview So Far – Fans, after which I found myself wanting to write some more - yes, even if I had already posted something previously on the same CNN Talk Asia interview: Random thoughts on Charice: She is a wonderful inspiration.

At her young age, Charice already promotes and supports other young talents:
Charice with Arjohn Gilbert during rehearsals for the concert "Christmas With Charice", Dec 2, 2011, Resorts World Manila. Recognizing Arjohn's talent, Charice invited him to join her concert where they sang "Pyramid". "Christmas With Charice" will be shown on TV5, Dec 11, 2011.

Congratulations to Charice for all she has achieved so far. And yes, you're right, she still has got so much to offer the world - she's extremely talented and continues to grow and expand her horizons as an artist; plus, she's got such a positive, generous and sensible attitude towards life that we actually learn from what this young person says and does.

Those who want to change her looks, want her thinner, or dressed up like the rest of today's pop artists are stuck on mere appearances. People who think and aspire like this are here today, gone tomorrow. They're fleeting images.

Charice has got the two most fundamental and important things covered: talent and character. And, she's pretty too. She's climbing to the top at her own pace, with her own unique identity, and she'll be staying there for a long, long time.

Random thoughts on Charice: She is a wonderful inspiration

Cried with Cha when she talked about her dad. All her life, she was missing him and then the unexpected happened weeks after this interview... anybody else would have been crushed by the fact of never seeing happen the family reconciliation she must have been yearning for.

But Charice is incredibly brave. I guess it's the faith and love in her heart that keep her up and let her always see the beauty in her life and in the world.

She is an incredibly loving daughter. Who else would have thought of dedicating the song "You Are So Beautiful" to a dad? I love my own father dearly and I know the song but dedicating this to him never occurred to me. Now that Charice did it for her dad - and the way she sang it, looking towards heaven and so full of yearning - it was just perfect.

Charice the person is Charice the artist, and she expresses her deepest emotions in the most natural way through her singing. We are so lucky to be on the receiving end of it.

Charice, your extraordinary talent, your heart of gold, your faith in God, and your love for your family make you a wonderful inspiration. Thank you. I hope you find solace in our love and support.

A Prayer for You, Charice

Accompanying you with our love and prayers, Cha.
We know that soon, God will put back the smile in your heart.
Cha, you've always been consistent about acknowledging your father, thanking him and loving him, despite the painful things that had happened in your family in the past.

You said, "...we had a really great relationship bago nangyari lahat ng gulo (before the troubles happened)... I loved him and I will still love him. He's still my Dad after all."

I admire you for that and said in a previous post that you have the sweetest, biggest heart - because despite the hurt you still feel, you find it in your heart to forgive.

You truly are an ideal daughter and God blesses you for that. I also continue to look up to your mother who has taught you not to live in bitter memories but to always look at the positive side of life.

During this difficult time for you, your mom and your brother, may you feel our love and support.

Here's a prayer for you, Cha:

May God give you strength to stand by your family and mourn by your father's side as you give your last goodbye.

May God give you peace to accept events and people that are simply beyond your power to change.

May God increase your faith in his plans for you: you have seen it before and I hope you continue seeing it - that when he allows pain to enter into your life, it's when he's closest to you and preparing you for bigger joys.

May you never forget, even when you go through your lowest and maybe even numbest moments, that God lovingly holds you and keeps you safe in the palm of his hand. Always.

And may God grant your father peace of soul.

Jim Paredes: "A Charice story - edited"

I just discovered this article by distinguished Filipino musician Jim Paredes and instead of simply posting the article link under 2010, I thought of reposting it here.

Why? It's a testimony to Charice's extraordinary talent and and a glimpse into the "forces" that she had to fight against even at such a young age.

From Ten Thousand Things by Jim Paredes on Tumblr:

A Charice story—edited
Posted on July 21, 2010
Was saving this for an article in the future. You might say, this was one of my many encounters with greatness.

Many years ago, I was asked to judge a children’s singing contest. A girl named Charice was one of the contestants. She was one of the bigger kids in the batch. Nevertheless, I was floored when she sang Whitney Houston’s ‘I wanna dance with somebody.’ In my eyes, she clearly bested all the rest by a mile. As a judge, I put her on top, of course.

When the final tallying was about to be done, someone connected with the contest came up to us (the judges) and asked if we were sure of our scores. We said we were. The guy then proceeded to say that Charice was not a ‘new talent’ anymore and had in fact come out in other contests already and he then subtly asked if would we want to review our choices.

I said no.

She won that round because we stuck to our guns. But at the grand finals, someone else took the big prize.

Sometimes true talent can stare at us in the face and we don’t see it. It has to take foreigners to praise them before we give notice.

That’s showbiz.

Addendum:

I didn’t expect this much reaction. A few thoughts:

Some people have commented or suggested that there was or may have been hanky-panky based on what I wrote above. For the record, I make no accusations of any manipulation or any wrong-doing especially in the final judging. I was not there. I did not even see it on TV. That night I judged was the only time I saw Charice live ever. Even on the night that I judged, we were in fact free to exercise our choice and we did despite the input given to us (which I was not comfortable with).

It’s possible that she could have had an off night on the finals and thus someone else was more deserving. I don’t know.
The reaction he referred to were the re-blogs and the comments. As Tim Cruz, the Louder music video director said, "Charice told me her fans were passionate".

Watch what impressed Jim Paredes (judges' panel, right) and how his delight showed on his face.

Crab Mentality: The "Other Side of the Bucket"

Charice at a radio interview in Japan
on October 8.
I'm reposting here excerpts of a very interesting article about "the other side of the bucket" within the crab mentality and the comment I made on the original site.

From escaping-mediocrity.com:
Crabs in a Bucket

...Fast forward to this morning. As I was drinking my coffee and perusing my twitter stream, and up pops this gem from @paul0coelho (He wrote The Alchemist, one of my all time favorite books): “Only mediocrity is safe. Get ready to be attacked, and be the best.”

Maybe it was the early hour. Maybe it was my post-event mushy brain. I don’t know. But the minute I read Paul’s tweet, I thought of those crabs in a bucket. So I sent him this tweet: “I’m thinking of crabs in a bucket. They always try to pull down the one who’s figured out how to escape.”

...There will always be people who will subtly or not so subtly try to keep us from escaping. Why? Because our escape threatens their mediocre existence. Pulling us down, sabotaging our efforts, picking apart our brilliant ideas – all of that keeps them feeling safe. And living undisturbed mediocre lives.

So what if we added a new piece to the crab mentality picture? Imagine a crab, or a group of crabs on the other side of the bucket building a ladder to aid your escape. They managed to crawl out of the bucket in spite of all the energetic attempts to pull them backwards. Because they’ve tasted freedom and they know your struggle, they are putting energy into aiding and abetting your escape.

I believe that for those of us determined to get out of the bucket, such a group exists. It may take some time to find them, but they are there, ready throw a safety rope over the edge and pull us out.

Start listening for them. Start looking for them. They are there. Reach just a little further and they’ll meet you at the edge of the bucket.
Read the full article on the original site

Below is the comment I made on the original site:
Crab mentality is deeply rooted in Filipino culture and it is one factor why it's been such a struggle for our country to develop at a faster pace. It's found in all social and economic levels and areas.

Take for instance the case of Charice, the Filipino pop singer who was introduced to the world by Oprah Winfrey. Coming from a poor background, she started singing in local competitions for a living when she was 7 years old and even then already experienced being told that she wasn't good enough when in fact she was way better than the rest. As a teen joining a televised national singing competition, she continued to be talked down and pulled down, even told that she didn't have what it takes to be a star simply because her critics thought she wasn't pretty, never mind her incredible singing talent and her ethics for working hard. It took the likes of Ellen de Generes, David Foster, and Oprah Winfrey to help her climb "out of the bucket" and prove herself in the international music scene.

When the Philippines comes out in international news, it is often in connection with corruption, poverty, illnesses, political instability, etc. Now, in Charice, we have an inspiring role model for both young and older Filipinos who want to reach their dreams despite all the obstacles that may be present in their life. She's a young Filipino who's showing the world the positive side of her country and her people and yet, the more she gains success, the more the crabs find fault with anything and everything she does and publicize it. I am a Filipino and yet this crab mentality still amazes me. And this is one reason why I - and her other fans and supporters - try to promote Charice in whatever way possible because, just like what you said, there does exist another group of crabs on the other side of the bucket: her success is the success not just of all Filipinos, but of everyone who believes in working hard to reach one's dreams. Thank God for those crabs "on the other side of the bucket"!

Charice, keep your feet on the ground and your sights on infinity!

I've seen the photos. I've watched the videos. I've read the comments. Congratulations, Charice, for your performance in the F1 Singapore event!

I hope you get some good rest and enjoy Singapore these few days before you fly to Doha, Qatar for your solo concert on September 29 and then on to Las Vegas for the David Foster & Friends on October 1. And then by mid-October, your Asia Pacific tour with DFF!

Traveling across the world and doing what you love best - I'm so happy with how things are turning out for you, and so proud of how much you have achieved at such a young age! I read a post on Facebook by your mom and she is so right (I translated the Tagalog parts for the non-Filipino Chasters):
I cried when I saw this video. Brings back the times... it's now my baby girl's songs that they're singing. Who would have thought that this would happen? BE PATIENT, TRUST IN GOD, AND DREAM HIGH... That's the secret...
I pray you continue as you are, Cha, despite all the pressure around you to be different. Keep your feet on the ground and your sights on infinity!

Charice rehearses dance moves for "Louder" music video...

...and plays hide-and-seek with Chasters.

(Click on the pictures to see Charice's or uploader's comments.)

Checked Twitter and found a series of photos shared by Charice since September 8 but, except for one, without showing her face!

Playful as ever, she knows how much her fans would like to see her and she teased us with these cool pictures. Anyway, she gave hints of what's coming with her music video for "Louder" which, according to MagnusToday's write up, she'll be shooting next Tuesday.

Luckily too, several people shared their own photos showing Charice's lovely face and I think that made Chasters more than happy.
What a SURPRISE! Just found pics @OfficialCharice took of herself w/my camera phone! She looks GORGEOUS xxoo
(I think Charice took this pic on the day of her Acuvue live chat.)
Now what we will be waiting for will be her performance in the 9/11 tribute during the NFL match between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans. She had proven it before and she'll do so again that she need not be an American to sing the beloved "Star Spangled Banner" and "God Bless America" with the passion and conviction that's expected to be spine-tingling, gooosebumping, phenomenal!

"Infinity" will still be released on October 5, 2011 but it is already high up in Amazon Japan's lists:

Charice's "Infinity" track list includes:

I say I am loving the titles - just reading them already gives a positive lift and makes me look forward to better things!
